Theatre: Brand & KEY ART

DC is currently Creative Director of Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Berkeley, CA.

Most of DC's design life has been devoted to promoting arts organizations. He has branded, rebranded, and evolved the visual brand identity of numerous arts orgs from the bottom up, giving them a consistent public face from logo through key art, and giving them visual branding systems that would sustain them through years of growth.

For many years, DC devoted his life to the the students of the School of Interaction and UI/UX Design at the Academy of Art University, SF, where he was Associate Director and creator of the Visual Design curriculum. While there, he achieved a goal: to create and inspire a small army of fellow Type Nerds whose enthusiasm and obsessiveness about letterforms and the words they convey would spread throughout the world.

FUN FACTS!

  • DC was born in The Bronx, but he has largely recovered.
  • He went to Yale. Ditto.
  • He was once nearly killed by a swarm of bees.
  • At 13, DC was detained at the West/East Berlin border three weeks before the wall came down.
  • He’s flown at Mach 2 (and boy were his arms tired!).
  • He’s met a pope and a couple of cardinals, but they didn’t end up dating.
  • While living there as a teenager, he used to explore London by going from rooftop to rooftop.
  • To relax, DC clarifies and browns butter. No, really.
  • While there, he lived for two years in the flat that the Clintons lived in while at law school. It was just as horrible as they say in their autobiographies!
  • He is an inveterate paleonerd, and will fight anyone who thinks his Allosaurus tattoo is a T. rex (By “fight,” he means pawing at the air and going “rawr rawr.”)
  • He was once twice his current size, and is currently on his third belly button.
